On 1st January 2007, Adam Air Aircraft Boeing 737-400 flight KI-574, registered as PK-KKW departed from Surabaya to Manado at 05:55UTC (12:55WIB, JKT time) with total of 96 passengers and 6 crew on board. The aircraft was first missing yesterday and it was later reported to be found near Polewali town (West Sulawesi). Base on recent news there were only 12 survivors of this air disaster.

Surprisingly, the news about discovery of the aircraft wreck near Polewali which was reported by number of worldwide news agencies including BBC, Reuters, CNN, New York Times, Financial Times, Forbes (nearly all major news agencies) base on the official Indonesian government source is NOT TRUE. All this information was false and based on rumours from villagers near Polewali. Basically, the villages spread rumours about the aircraft wreck near their village, other added some more fantasy stories and somehow almost everyone started to believe in it. I'm not very surprised with all this as Indonesia is spread over a very wide geographical area and such confusion can happen. Bad weather is also hampering the rescue operation and government is still running rescue operation after Indonesian ferry sank off the coast of Java on Friday (29.12.2006). Sadly the confusion resulted in major rescue team being deployed to the incorrect location.

Now, interesting collection of false statements:

"The plane's location has been found and 12 people from the 102 people on board have survived," said Adam Air rescue spokesman Capt. Hartono. "We are going to evacuate them to Makassar," he said, referring to South Sulawesi's provincial capital.

First Air Marshal Eddy Suyanto, the commander of Hasanuddin air base in the Sulawesi city of Makassar, told Radio Elshinta: "The plane is in ruins."

Police Chief Col. Genot Hariyanto had earlier said that search and rescue teams arrived at the crash site on Sulawesi's western coast early Tuesday and found the charred remains of Adam Air Flight KI-574 and scores of bodies.

First Air Marshal Eddy Suyanto, later apologised for the incorrect statement - I must admit he really looked like he was very sorry and very embarrassed. I think the lesson to everyone (including me) from this issue is the apparent need for a careful verification of any source of information, even if it is an official government source. Myself I was wondering since morning why local TV stations didn't show any video or photos of the located wrack of the missing aircraft.

Just for reminder, on February 2006 I've mentioned that an air accident like this one could happen before the end of 2006. Fortunately, my prediction was wrong and unfortunately only by less than one day.

Frankly speaking base on my experience of living here for more than five years, I seriously doubt this accident will change anything in the poor safety conditions of local budget airlines. Actually not only aircrafts but also airports, as the rampant corruption and poor safety procedures at local airports are simply shocking. The price tag on this is human lifes.

In recent TV interview Ruth Simatupang, investigator at KNKT (Komite Nasional Keselamatan Transportasi/National Transportation Safety Committee) mentioned that poor condition of Indonesian airports is a significant safety factor in high rate of aircraft incidents in Indonesia, especially lack of advanced communication and navigation systems. She also mentioned that some of the local aircraft operators seem to cut costs too much.

Mark, ada beberapa hal negatif tentang Indonesia, tapi mungkin ada sesuatu yg membuat anda tetap berada di Jakarta, will you share that "positive" thing (s) that keeps you stay here?

Marek Bialoglowy said...

Budi, the issue which I discussed at that time was not a very positive thing but I believe it was important to write about it. However, if you read my text you’ll probably notice that I write some positive things about certain local airline and I recommend it to all travelers who visit Indonesia. Unfortunately I can write the same about local airports, as I have only bad experience related to it, sorry.

I also wrote about beautiful side of Indonesia, such as amazing Siau island (highly recommended for all tourists), or other areas of North Sulawesi. Indonesia is a highly recommended destination for tourists, but I think everyone should be aware of safety issues such as potential risks related to use of budget airlines. I actually almost finished one article showing the good side of Indonesia which I’ll post here sometime this week and I admit it is always better to show the bright side of life. Thanks for your valuable input!

As of 0:39 WIB/GMT+7 / 17:39 UTC the location of missing PK-KKW aircraft is still unknown - reported by Indonesian govt.

Interesting post, I appreciate the depth of your research on this accident.

Frightening isn't it, accident like this happen every 2 years or so in Indonesia. It seems to me people tend to accept things like this as a temptation from God instead of urging government to make a better safety regulation.

Anyway thanks for the post, maybe I'll quote your post in my blog (with your permission).

Title: Gate of Dimensions
From: Mrs.M3

-------------------------

Dear Marek,

I am so impressed with your sharp writing, as it really criticizes for better changes. I praise you for that. Looking forward to

read more from you, especially on your view about aviation matters. For you to know, I have bookmarked your Blog. Please ignore people like Budi Winarno, for those kinds of people never know when where to place their pride and ego, a classic chauvinistic habit to internationally ignore. He should have known that the topic of your blog is about accident, and there is no positive things. Unless, he is illiterate, by cause.

about accident, especially, caused by the corporate ignorance, made blame-able onto the field operators, in this case the pilots.

In this session, I would like to bring up something odd and unconventional.

First of all, I would like to pay my deepest respect to all of brave Adam Air pilots and cabin crews, who maintain their

professionalism against the bureaucratic ignorance for safety and matter alike. I will quote this referral link ->

http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=240082

Second of all, I would like to utter my deepest regret and sympathy to all of the missing unknown people on board of KI-574. May

the family be bereaved and avoided against continuous misery. I hope they could be found, no matter what happened.

I was an active pilot, type rated for Boeing series, and however since I am married, I work only for seasonal chartered pilot for

certain short-range Regional Asian's Air-Cargo carriers to gain flying-hours. Lately, I flew 737-400/500/800/900 classes, I

predicted the ages of my birdy babies are relatively young.

I write to you, Marek, due to the latest tragic happening to one of the Indonesian low budget air carriers. At the same time, once

I took my chance to experience the domestic Adam Air, just like you did. Therefore, this incident had come to my attention.

When I read the news, as a mother, my mind lingers. I will cry if I see any children and babies to survive by nature's miracle

will.

I wonder, why so oftenly we hear news reporting, Indonesian budget airliners skidding on runway, either on wet or dry tarmac. Why

so oftenly we hear news, their tyre exploded, or hydraulic malfunctioned.

Maybe I could find some answers in your blog and other replies from fellow readers.

-----------------------

My point of sharing with you, Marek.

I followed the detail of the accident happened there since the tragedy of Tinombala up to GA 152, last fated ATC error in

Sibolangit. Then to what happened to the Mandala which kissed the ground at Jalan Djamin Ginting Medan in early September 2006.

The second largest after Sibolangit incident.

When I heard this latest KI-574 missing news for the second day, as many rumors speculate and disinformation elevate, I called my

friend, a serious senior retired Pilot in Indonesia, to chat and to ask for his fresh opinion over this matter.

Surprisingly, he suggested a possible diversion to me. He mentioned about the similar disastrous aviation history happened in

Indonesia around 1960, where a Garuda plane disappeared in Sulawesi water territory and the next couple of rescue planes also

disappeared into thin air and all of them were never meant to be found for good. It was totally a surprise to me and became an

interesting new issue to think about.

What I asked to that senior aviator were:

1. The exact flight path preset.
2. The certainty of altitude, since the KNKT quickly announced blaming the pilot for flying too low at FL 8,000 feet and not as

designated at ceiling of FL 32,000 feet.
3. The likely weather by that area.

He replied me, and gave illustration of the possible path. He told me that the cloud was reaching ceiling rather than usual, and

the wind blew as strong as 30 knots.

Directly, he shared his professional view with me. He predicted that what might have happened was, the airplane was striving and

climbing up 30,000 feet, then encountered possible bad weather, unstable air mass, too dynamic hard winds, wet condition (rain)

and lightning. This lightning could have jammed their electricals thus communication. Then he predicted of Air Pocket causing

stall from 30,000 feet to 8,000 level. But he didn't tell me further what caused the 8,000 level to drop further to sea level by

local altimeter. He assumed me to know by myself.

Then, suddenly, he cut in with "believe it or not" view. He told me that he was thinking of Wormhole in the sky. As wormhole

experiences often happen whenever gigantic clouds gather.

What is wormhole he meant about?

It happened before, somewhere off coast of Florida, when a father and son flew in their small airplane to another city. They

encountered high wall of thick clouds, high winds and guess what? - They also lost communication with the local ATC.

Finally, they decided to find gap between the thick clouds. So they circled the coulds and entered the fairer region where the

could was not so dark. Along the way, they saw the cloud circled around their airplane, like rotating tunnel. They wondered, not

for anything but its beauty.

When they landed at the destination airfield in other town, the airfield manager asked them regarding their embarkation origin,

and the moments during the lost contact.

The father and son pilot told the stories smoothly, but not the airfield manager. Because, the scientific fact showed that, they

didn't even use the estimated fuel for such distance, and they arrived in only couple of minutes count, instead of the presumed

hourly journey.

No clue could explain the phenomena. It is totally Quantum Physics phenomena. It could be triggered by unbalanced electromagnetic

field.

Then, this Indonesian senior aviator who talked to me, began to speculate about the not-calculated possibility of Bermuda time-

warp and wormhole effect. The plane might go disappear/missing, but actually they are actually exist there, without losing time.

We will never know when they might return. In our time perspective, perhaps, 10/20/30/50/100/250 years from now, when we are

already reaching older state of physical mental being. Meanwhile, they might return, released from the time-warp, in their

preserved stage of age and physical mental being, because those pilots, cabin crews and passengers, have actually just passed only

several minutes.

I was skeptical for the first hour long distance phone chats.

I was intrigued by the next hour.

That senior Indonesian aviator reminded me, when a body of vessel or aircraft is considered missing, why should you considered the

people on board all dead while you can not even find evidence of wreckage on terrain or undersea, thus the physical corpses?

I asked him more, how about if they found the wreckage in the next day including the dead bodies?

He answered me, then the search would be considered game over, then - there you are, your dead relatives and the wreckage,

detoured by high speed winds and bad weather.

He backfired me, but what if not?

At the beginning of our conversation, he mentioned something, that - he DISAGREE of the search location - should the plane really

crashed. Therefore, he pinpointed to me, that it would take an energetic search in vain.

At the second-half of our conversation, he mentioned the possible Quantum Leap phenomena, a very rare factor of nature, neglected

by our common human minds, because it's too unconventionally "Science-Fiction" to our daily life. But, that nature factor is real,

exist and could happen anywhere, anytime in this world.

He called it the Gate of Dimension.

Thank you.

Sincerely Yours.
From Mrs.M3

M3, a very comprehensive and interesting comment! FYI Budi is actually a friend of mine and this was just his personal advice to be more positive in the time of disaster happening here all the time. As for your comment, I am more of a sceptical type and I personally think it is probably a matter of an aircraft flying in a bad weather while it should not, with some other additional factors that combined resulted in the disaster.

However, I happen to talk to some individuals familiar with this area and I've heard that it is an Indonesian version of Bermuda triangle. Lots of strange things happen to aircrafts in this area and also bad weather can get very severe and dangerous.

I'm continuously monitoring local news and unfortunately as of 2AM local time (WIB/GMT+7) there is still no news of the missing aircraft. Sadly the chances of anyone surviving the accident after so many hours are slim, yet I think we should not lose hope until PK-KKW is found.

Dear Marek,

I have opened my new blog, focusing on rare opinions for Dark Aviation and Dark Intelligence matters, including Unsolved Air Disasters, Secretive Airliner's Dangerous Policies, and hopefuly collections of Intelligence Enigma in the near future.

Sometimes, if you share similar interests, please kindly stop by at my page:

Inside, I plan to collect all types of opinions, from strict conservative logic, funny odd unconventional up to creative unthinkable intriguing speculation.

About your saying that there is the possible Bermuda area in Indonesia, you are correct and many might have think so too, including me.

I will post several in my new blog, about real experiences of fellow foreign pilots (who had flown passing certain territory) in Indonesia. Including myself, when I was a not yet a PIC.

I think the stories will be interesting from the unconventional perspective of Pilot's personal X-Files. It could bring goosebumps to you, because they were true stories by live experiences.

Thank you, Marek, have a nice New Year.

Just a note that your previous entry about Adam Air was originally linked in the wikipedia entry but, as of yesterday, has the link has been taken out.

I am another expat living in Indonesia and it is disgusting how these businessmen knowingly jeapordize passengers by knowingly putting them into poorly managed planes. Yet, we know that Adam Air will probably only be warned and several months or even weeks later, the Indonesian people will fly them again. The Government will not do anything about it, the mass media will not report it comprehensively and as indicated by the forums, there are so many unreported incidents that should not occur in an airline at all.

The longer the people remain uninformed or indifferent about the serious safety issues in most of Indonesia's airlines, the more people are put at risk. Statistically speaking, there are fatal aviation disasters everyone one or two years in Indonesia. My experience flying domestically already tells me that people have no knowledge of safety concerns. People here have become accustomed to inefficiency and unreliability here but in this case, it's a life-threatening issue. While there is nothing we can do about the Government, bravo to you for letting as many people as possible know about the poor management of the country's airlines.

Czesc Marek,

I presume from the name you must be Polak stranded w Dzakarcie. Wszystkiego najlepszego. My comment is : "świetne" story about Adam Air that I haven't read in other (Indonesian) media. I stumbled into your blog when reading http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3047546, pilots / aviation guys forum about the missing plane. I feel sad and pity about this situation and for sure somebody has to be responsible for all this "aviation" mess in this country. Let's not go back too far to Soeharto's regime, whoever is in charge today, now, should someday be responsible if he/she doesn't do nothing (anything) to fix the problem that we are facing now. It should be done NOW !!! Or should we go back to "year zero" first, just like the Cambodians during the Pol Pot regime, destroy everything and build a new brave Indonesia, to get rid of all the corruption in this beautiful country ? Just an idea. Don't take it too seriously. Back to Adam Air (AA), I think the officials of AA haven't done enough PR (Public Relation) and should have had a "continuous" press conference once the news broke. Just show their "pretty" face on TV every 2 or 3 hours, explain and show to public that they are "doing" something, (even if they don't), to show that they care, give an explanation to public about the situation, even if they don't know themselves where the "poor" plane was stranded. Because the bold fact is, and everybody is aware of it, that nobody on earth as of now but only GOD the Allmighty knows where the plane is, right ? Instead, they just let the incompetent bureaucrats (govt authorities) to talk to public and seems like the AA guys are hiding behind the back of Hatta Rajasa and other govt officials. What a sad situation. To all the relatives of those on the plane: I don't know if it is proper to say my deepest condolences at this moment / time, since nobody knows yet for sure about the fate of the plane, its crew and passengers. I just wish and hope that eventually by the Grace of God everything would turn "miraculously" well. Who knows ?

Thank you all for your comments. I am very positively surprised with the continuous interest in the story and public interest in finding and sharing facts which for certain reasons major media won't mention. Lately some interesting question came to my mind and I hope to hear what you all think. After so many days of rescue efforts I start to wonder what the total cost of “flying circus” style airlines and poor airports is. Does anyone know how much the Adam Air rescue operation cost and who will pay for it? Will the individuals responsible for this disaster cover the cost of rescue operation? I'm afraid it will be paid with our tax money and considering the scale of the operation I think lot less money will go for education, new navigation systems etc. It would be great if someone could provide some more input on the financials of aircraft disaster rescue operation - maybe some pilots reading this could come up with something.

Comment by HB-IWC dari Airliners.net:

Very disturbing, finally, was an intervention by Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who has openly come to the defense of Adam Air and its management, stating that the airline was for sure not to blame for whatever had happened. Coming from the country's number 2, this statement is very disturbing. One would expect a little bit more common sense from a person is such a responsible position, yet when considering that the Chairman of Adam Air and Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives is the Vice President's closest political ally, these statements come as no surprise.

I saw this interview on Metro TV (brainwashing news agency). Without any knowledge of the cause of the accident Jusuf Kalla was defending Adam Air. This is disgusting, and I bet people will still vote for him in next ellection.

Dear Marek, thank's for your comprehensive research and writings about this matter. I live quite close with the airline industry, my mother was a flight attendant of Garuda Indonesia, and I trust to fly by Garuda only.
My family and I went to PangkalPinang last Christmas, we had to use Sriwijaya Air, and it freaked me out (at the first time) – thank God the flight went smoothly, although we had few hours delayed due to the bad weather – but now I realized delay is more important than try to be on schedule by gambling with the weather condition).
We have no choice since Garuda does not service that route (we know how broke and financially mismanaged Garuda is).
In that case, we have no choice but to fly with the Low Cost Carrier.
We flew with Boeing 737-200. I really traumatized with that type of plane since I lost my friend who died on Lion Air accident in Solo (737-200).
I also got the premonition 12 hours before the Mandala Accident in Medan happened (who also used the 737-200).
I realized that age of the plane reflected directly or indirectly to the flying hours and the aircraft maintenance.
In Indonesia we are famous for neglecting or careless in the maintenance program.
In this Adam Air case, I am also very concern regarding, my friend is working in Angkasapura II (who in charged for the Central and East Indonesia Airports), coincidently he is the Adam Air’s Pilot brother in law also.
I am so worried and concerned about their (the Cabin Crew and all the Passengers) lives.
Hope everything will turn out to be fine and this thing won’t be happening again in the future.
We have so many homeworks to do.
Hope floats.

In Japan, the Japan Airlines' safety records have been marred badly since it's merger with Japan Air Systems. It has received numerous warnings. And yet, people still fly with Japan Airlines...

Everyone here seems to be bringing politics into this accident. Let's just see it from the simple point of view that it's an " accident " instead of making a mass of tangled knots. My sympathy are on the families onboard flight KI 574.
We can't say which airline is the best. Why nobody mentioned about SQ jumbo Crashed in Taiwan in 2002. Or Garuda In medan. Bad management issue can be deal with later on. Why I'm still a Krisflyer member even though SQ plane do crashed after all. However I believe no airline company would wanna deal with this kinda situation and mishaps.
As a frequent world traveller, I always think that there is some risk I have to deal with when flying. Some matters are uncontrollable by human.
I never fly wth this Adam Air , my choice is always the legacy airline. But I believe everyone's choice of airline depends on their pocket. As a businessman, I learnt that Indonesians love it when things are CHEAP.

Marek Bialoglowy said...

R.Sianipar, so you think that's just an "accident" and politics has nothing to do with it? Following your way of thinking I should think that corruption at airports has also nothing to do with it. Airport radar and navigation systems that doesn't work but signal can be picked up by distant Singapore - this has nothing to do with politics also right? Very high rate of aircraft incidents in Indonesia is also probably matter of bad luck and it has definitely nothing to do with politics as it is within "matters are uncontrollable by human", right? Well, I must say you sound like one local politician who publicly says that it is not Adam Air's fault just two days after the disaster when wreck of the aircraft hasn't even been found and nothing has been investigated. Yes, definitely I clearly see no relation to politics. Man, open your eyes and start thinking as you've been heavily brainwashed by local media. Actually, I feel sad that you think of yourself as a "businessman" and defend poor safety practices by saying "Indonesians love it when things are CHEAP". Reading this I start thinking of those "businessmen" who produce fake medicines, toxic fake cosmetics, sell illegally imported toxic toys or expired food etc. and living of poorly educated people who simply don't know the implications and danger related to the use of such services/products. I'll just summarise it by saying that those "businessman" have blood on their hands. Too bad the judicial system is so corrupted as most of such "businessman" in other countries would quickly enjoy life behind bars. I feel word "criminals" to be more appropriate, nothing to do with business.

Anonymous said...

Sianipar, have you also heard of a "natural" disaster at Lapindo? If not you should watch ANTV more often.

Anonymous said...

R.Sianipar,

I am also a frequent traveller. Yes, when we have the financial ability we can take legacy carriers. However, when people pay cheaper fares this does not mean they are willing to risk their lives to get to their destinations. Indonesian people must realize that with the technology and aviation standards today, you are NOT supposed to face a significant risk when you fly. You must not shrug your shoulders and say 'accident' when you have, let's say, one fatal accident per year. With the technology available and global aviation standards, it is simply not acceptable. Even the person paying the cheapest fare should get there safely. The fares should not come at the risk of proper maintenance and developing a culture of safety. Having flown multiple times domestically, I have seen things that are not acceptable: seats without seatbelts, a kid who is old enough to have her own seat sitting on the lap of a parent without a seatbelt, the flight attendant sitting in the toilet .. these things should not be accepted.

Airlines that are clearly negligent should not exist at all. People should not be saying 'Don't fly xxxxxair' as they are saying today and choosing flights as if it's some sort of death lottery. It is totally unacceptable and is hindering Indonesia's economic growth by giving a bad reputation abroad.

I agree that other airlines have their accidents but if you look at 1. accident statistics and 2. the pilot forums linked by Marek, you will see that there IS a significantly higher % of accidents in Indonesia and it is directly correlated to the fact that the planes are not properly maintained, training inadequate and lack of culture of safety.

It is up to the Indonesian people to step up and voice their concerns. Some Indonesian people have to CARE about Indonesia!

Do not shrug your shoulders and say that the matter is out of your control, like sitting in traffic in Jakarta for 2 hours. Or having power shortage. Because these things ARE within your control, you just have to ask for it.

They have found part of the missing Adam Air aircraft:
A fisherman yesterday found part of a plane about 300 meters (1,000 feet) from the shore in Pare Pare, in South Sulawesi province, said Anung Sutanto, an officer at the Indonesian navy's search and rescue center in Makassar. Authorities had last contact with the plane in the waters off the Mamuju town, some 200 kilometers north of Pare Pare.

According to the news, Agung Laksono rejected the claims that he is the Chairman of Adam Air. He told the news that he is no longer the chairman of the company since March 2005 (http://www.detiknews.com/index.php/detik.read/tahun/2007/bulan/01/tgl/12/time/113125/idnews/729620/idkanal/10)

Interestingly, when I tried to check whether he is the chairman or not on the Adam Air site. I could no longer able to access the "Welcome message from the chairman" page (http://www.flyadamair.com/about%20us/welcome_from_chairman.htm)

I would have thought the webmaster has recently deleted all the files on the site.

Fortunately, I could always go to the "way back" machine and found this page

There should be no problem if you fly with Garuda. Just avoide airlines with bad reputation.

Hi do you know that recently there's another "incident" on one of ADAM Air Fleet KI172, it nearly broke in two parts, but the ADAM Air official act like nothing's happened! I must say i'm concern with this ignorance of safety, and this ignorance even happen inside the cabin, this happen where i flew with one of indonesian airlines to malang where in the middle of the flight, suddenly i heard one of passenger phone ringging (i might know nothing about plane regulation stuff, but i pretty damn sure no one allowed to turn on their cell phones during flights). I just don't get it, do these people realize, that he or her might put him or herself and not to mention every people on board on danger
